World Premiere: Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74

04/12/1999

Eight-color press with double sheet-reversing and coating system - One Pass Productivity with enhanced productivity for all Speedmaster SM 74 eight-color presses

Participants of the demo weeks conducted by Heidelberger Druckma-schinen AG (Heidelberg) on the subject of "Speedmaster SM 74 - One Pass Productivity in the Medium Format" had the opportunity to view a world premiere. The world's first 50 x 70 Speedmaster in an eight-color configuration complete with two sheet reversing devices, inline coating system and extended delivery was put on show at the Wiesloch factory in March. It will shortly go into production at a European print shop. Several other customers have already ordered the Speedmaster 74 eight-color press with coating system from Heidelberg.

The international guests were particularly interested in the practical demonstration of the benefits offered by the "One Pass Productivity" supported by the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74. This form of production requires superior printing press technology when printing four-color jobs in order to prevent perfected sheets being scratched or smudged on their way to the delivery pile. The technology must also be able to handle dispersion coating. The Speedmaster SM 74 also opens up new and interesting applications such as the production of magazine wrappers or eight-page brochures with coated outside pages.

The configuration of the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 eight-color press with double sheet reversing and coating system has been made possible by redesigning the sheet guide in the delivery unit. The Heidelberg Venturi principle guides the sheet safely through the delivery unit on a cushion of air. The precise matching of the dryers to the sheet travel is particularly important for 4/4-color jobs. The extended delivery unit features two infrared hot-air dryers and one circulation dryer from Heidelberg DryStar which are optimally tuned to the sheet guide plates. Sheet travel has been further optimized so that even the most difficult jobs involving coating can be handled at high speed. The maximum printing speed of the demonstrated press is 13,000 sheets  per hour. For Speedmaster SM 74 eight-color presses without the sheet reversing and coating system combination, the new sheet guide can even increase maximum printing speeds to 15,000 sheets per hour - i.e. 30,000 printed sides per hour!

The world's market leader in printing systems also showed the invited guests a range of additional innovations which will be fitted as standard to the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 series with immediate effect. These include a new, narrower sheet brake and sheet guide plates which consist of fewer segments. The new arrangement of the Venturi nozzles obviates any need for an air-cushion drum in the upsweep of the delivery. This improves accessibility in this area and has a positive side effect, in that it reduces the number of control elements and greatly facilitates operation if frequent changes of material stock are required. The new sheet guide in the delivery unit is standard equipment for both the eight-color press with coating system and all Speedmaster SM 74 units with high-pile delivery.

The fact that the ink fountain zones can be preset with CIP3 data from the digital prepress stage means that the OK sheet is reached in no time. The openness of the CPC control unit used by the Heidelberg Speedmaster
SM 74 for transferring data ensures a secure investment in the future, particularly in view of the rapid innovation cycles that characterizes the prepress sector.

The Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 can produce double-page, four-color publications in only a single run - thereby minimizing production costs and cutting production times substantially. Since there is no need for manual sheet reversal, this saves both operating time and space capacity and completes the move to medium-format industrial production - from pallet to pallet.
