Heidelberg Boosts Productivity and Flexibility in Mid-Format Printing

Speedmaster SM 74 with new feeder and optimized sheet travel
At drupa 2004, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will present the Speedmaster SM 74 with a new feeder. From this time the press will feature an optimized sheet travel concept and a high-pile delivery on every model. With 28,000 printing units delivered, the Speedmaster SM 74 is the most successful mid-format press. Its wealth of different models make it popular with commercial printers as a two, four or five-color press. Industrial printers can choose up to ten colors for 5/5 printing. A coating unit and extended delivery are optionally available with the long eight-color perfecting press. With a speed of up to 15,000 sheets per hour - both in straight printing and perfecting - the Speedmaster SM 74 is one of the most effective presses in its class. Automation components that come as standard ensure fast setup and easy operation.
The newly developed feeder features a central suction tape and does not require the sheet smoother, which normally must be adjusted manually. The sheet travel allows plenty of time for individual sheets to be adjusted to the front lays - even at maximum speed - giving greater stability in the printing run. This highly efficient feeder features numerous automated preset functions.
Sheet travel between printing units has also been further optimized. All transfer cylinders, including the double-sized transfer drum, now feature closed surfaces with TransferJackets Plus. TransferJackets Plus are new, specially coated cylinder surfaces that are highly ink repelling and are significantly easier to clean. For perfecting presses, a new generation of impression cylinder jackets is also available. These PerfectJackets Plus combine top quality perfecting with longer intervals between cleaning processes thanks to the jacket surface's improved ink repelling properties.
In particular, the combination of printing quality and stable, high running speed ensures excellent productivity with the Speedmaster SM 74, regardless of whether it is a four-color model in a smaller business or a ten-color industrial press.
