European printers win awards for top quality
The winners of the "Excellence in Perfecting"
competition held by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg)
recently received their awards at the Print Media Academy in
Heidelberg. Speedmaster users all over the world were invited to
share their most successful product printed on a Heidelberg
Speedmaster with sheet reversal device. The response to this
competition, the first of its kind - and launched by Heidelberg as
part of drupa 2000 - has been overwhelmingly positive. An
independent panel of expert judges had to select winners from among
the total of 65 entries from Australia, Italy, Finland and the USA.
The final winners were the products from four European companies.
First prize went to Heining + Müller from Germany for
their product "Work Book". The second, third and fourth
prizes went to Sommer-Druck of Germany for its "Mercedes Benz
C-Class" brochure, Francesco Ghezzi of Italy for its product
"Versace Watches" and Skive Offset from Denmark for its
brochure "Lego: Play for Live". Representatives of the
companies received their awards from Dr. Jürgen Rautert, Head
of the Sheetfed Offset Division, at a prize ceremony.
All of the winning print shops have been working for many
years with a whole range of Speedmaster printing units in various
format classes. Their work has been principally for industrial
customers. The panel of judges gave the assessment criteria
different weightings. Particular emphasis was placed on printing
quality factors such as registration, inking, dot gain and
uniformity in recto and verso printing, with a weighting of 60
percent being accorded to this aspect. Design and graphics,
prepress quality, finishing and the influence of the printing stock
all contributed 10 percent each to the overall evaluation.
The award-winning pieces will be on display until the end of
the year in the foyer of the Print Media Academy.
Proven one-pass productivity
The perfecting technology used in the Speedmaster series does
not just support the cost-effective production of dual-sided print
products in a single machine pass. It also delivers excellent print
quality with wet-on-wet print- ing in 4/4, 5/5 and 6/6 colors, with
or without coating. "The diversity and ex- cellent quality of
all the entries, including brochures, books and calendars, confirms
that the Heidelberg Speedmaster with its sheet-reversal technology
is the undisputed world market leader" is the conclusion from
the competition. Heidelberg has also achieved a "quantum
leap" with its "Perfect Jacket", the new,
exchangeable impression cylinder jacket made from a ceramic
material used in space travel, explains Hans-Erwin Börncke,
Head of Product Management for the Speedmaster 102. Perfect Jacket
combines cost-effective printing with outstanding quality. During a
brief resume, Mr. Börncke recounted the technical development
of the Speedmaster 52, 74 and 102 series since 1992. These models
cover all the format classes in sheetfed offset printing.
